How to pick a random letter
- A letter is picked as soon as the page opens. Click Pick again for another one.
- To draw several at once, raise Letters. Tick No repeats if each letter may only come up once.
- Use From to draw only vowels or consonants, and Case to switch between capitals and small letters.
Games and classroom ideas
- Category games: draw a letter, then everyone has a minute to write an animal, a city, a food and a name that start with it. Repeat letters are dull, so tick No repeats and draw a batch for the whole game.
- Phonics and spelling: draw a small letter and ask for its sound or a word that starts with it.
- Initials: pick two or three letters for a character, a made-up company or a team name.
- Word building: draw a handful of letters and see who can make the longest word from them.
Getting a playable mix
Of the 26 letters, 5 are vowels counted this way, so a draw from A to Z gives a vowel only about 1 time in 5. Seven letters straight from A to Z can easily leave you with one vowel or none. For word games, draw vowels and consonants separately, for example 3 vowels and 4 consonants, and combine them.
