How to generate a strong password
- Choose Password for a random string of characters, or Passphrase for random words that are easier to remember and type.
- For a password, drag the slider to set the length (16 or more is a good default) and choose which kinds of characters to include. For a passphrase, choose how many words; 6 or more is strong.
- Copy a password. Click “Generate again” for new ones.
What makes a password strong?
Strength comes from unpredictability, measured in bits of entropy. Every extra character multiplies the number of possible passwords, so a long password from a smaller set of characters can beat a short one full of symbols. Each password here always includes at least one of every character type you select.
