How to convert milligrams to micrograms
- Take the value in milligrams.
- Use the formula micrograms = milligrams × 1,000.
- For example, 0.025 mg is 25 µg.
About milligrams and micrograms
Multiply milligrams by 1,000 to get micrograms. 0.4 mg is 400 mcg, 0.05 mg is 50 mcg and 1.5 mg is 1,500 mcg.
Some products give a strength in decimal milligrams, like 0.1 mg, while others give the same strength as 100 mcg. Thyroid tablets such as levothyroxine are a common case. Converting to micrograms gets rid of the leading zeros, which are where most reading mistakes happen.
Examples
- 0.025 mg (the same vitamin D dose as 25 mcg) is 25 µg
- 0.1 mg (a thyroid tablet shown as 0.1 mg) is 100 µg
- 0.4 mg (a folic acid tablet shown as 0.4 mg) is 400 µg
- 1 mg (one milligram) is 1,000 µg
