How to convert micrograms to milligrams
- Take the value in micrograms.
- Use the formula milligrams = micrograms ÷ 1,000.
- For example, 25 µg is 0.025 mg.
About micrograms and milligrams
A milligram is 1,000 micrograms, so divide micrograms by 1,000 to get milligrams. 400 mcg is 0.4 mg, 50 mcg is 0.05 mg and 2,500 mcg is 2.5 mg. The microgram is written µg in science and mcg on labels and prescriptions, because a handwritten µ is easy to misread as an m.
Vitamins and minerals needed in tiny amounts, such as vitamin D, vitamin B12, folic acid, iodine and selenium, are usually listed in micrograms. When one product gives mcg and another gives mg, converting them to the same unit is the only way to compare them.
Examples
- 25 µg (vitamin D labelled 25 mcg, or 1,000 IU) is 0.025 mg
- 400 µg (the folic acid amount often advised before and in early pregnancy) is 0.4 mg
- 1,000 µg (a 1,000 mcg vitamin B12 tablet) is 1 mg
- 100 µg (a 100 mcg thyroid tablet) is 0.1 mg
