How to convert milligrams to grams
- Take the value in milligrams.
- Use the formula grams = milligrams ÷ 1,000.
- For example, 200 mg is 0.2 g.
About milligrams and grams
A gram is 1,000 milligrams, so divide milligrams by 1,000 to get grams. 250 mg is 0.25 g, 1,500 mg is 1.5 g and 20 mg is 0.02 g.
Tablet strengths, vitamins and the sodium and caffeine lines on food labels are given in milligrams, while daily totals and recipes often use grams. Converting both to the same unit is the only safe way to add them up.
Examples
- 200 mg (a standard ibuprofen tablet) is 0.2 g
- 325 mg (a regular-strength aspirin tablet in the US) is 0.325 g
- 500 mg (a standard paracetamol tablet) is 0.5 g
- 2,300 mg (the US daily value for sodium on food labels) is 2.3 g
