How to convert grams to milligrams
- Take the value in grams.
- Use the formula milligrams = grams × 1,000.
- For example, 0.1 g is 100 mg.
About grams and milligrams
Multiply grams by 1,000 to get milligrams. 0.2 g is 200 mg, 1.5 g is 1,500 mg and 0.05 g is 50 mg. Moving the decimal point three places to the right gives the same answer.
Nutrition guidance is often written in grams while labels and supplements list milligrams, or the other way round. Turning everything into milligrams makes small amounts easier to compare, since 0.3 g and 0.03 g look alike at a glance but 300 mg and 30 mg do not.
Examples
- 0.1 g (a tenth of a gram) is 100 mg
- 0.5 g (half a gram) is 500 mg
- 2 g (the WHO’s daily sodium limit for adults) is 2,000 mg
- 5 g (the WHO’s daily salt limit for adults) is 5,000 mg
