How to convert inches to meters
- Take the value in inches.
- Use the formula meters = inches × 0.0254.
- For example, 12 in is 0.305 m.
About inches and meters
An inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, which is 0.0254 meters. Multiply inches by 0.0254 to get meters, or divide by 39.37, which gives the same answer. For a quick estimate divide by 40: it comes out about 1.6% low.
Meters are the unit for room sizes, building plans and heights on official forms in most of the world, while US furniture, doors, screens and lumber are measured in inches. Converting straight to meters saves a step when the other side of the comparison is already metric.
