How to convert gallons (US) to cups (US)
- Take the value in gallons (US).
- Use the formula cups (US) = gallons (US) × 16.
- For example, 0.25 gal is 4 cups.
About gallons and cups
A US gallon is 4 quarts, 8 pints or 16 cups. Multiply gallons by 16 to get cups: half a gallon is 8 cups and a quarter gallon (one quart) is 4 cups.
You need this when scaling a recipe up for a crowd, making sweet tea, punch or brine by the gallon, or working out how many servings a jug holds. A UK (imperial) gallon is bigger, at 19.22 US cups, so check where a recipe comes from.
Examples
- 0.25 gal (a quart) is 4 cups
- 0.5 gal (a half-gallon carton of milk) is 8 cups
- 1 gal (a gallon jug) is 16 cups
- 5 gal (a 5 gallon water cooler bottle) is 80 cups
