How to convert feet to yards
- Take the value in feet.
- Use the formula yards = feet ÷ 3.
- For example, 3 ft is 1 yd.
About feet and yards
Divide feet by 3 to get yards. One foot is a third of a yard, about 0.333 yd, so 10 feet is 3.33 yards and 30 feet is exactly 10 yards.
You need this when a room or garden is measured in feet but the material is sold by the yard: fabric, ribbon, some carpets and turf. Round up when buying, because shops sell whole or half yards.
Examples
- 3 ft (one yard) is 1 yd
- 12 ft (a common carpet roll width) is 4 yd
- 360 ft (an American football field including the end zones) is 120 yd
- 5,280 ft (one mile) is 1,760 yd
