How to convert Fahrenheit to Kelvin
- Take the value in Fahrenheit.
- Use the formula K = (°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15.
- For example, 32 °F is 273.15 K.
About Fahrenheit and Kelvin
To convert Fahrenheit to kelvin, subtract 32, multiply by 5/9 and add 273.15. There is a shorter route: add 459.67 and multiply by 5/9. Both give the same answer, so 68 °F is 293.15 K.
Kelvin is the scale used in physics, chemistry and engineering because it starts at absolute zero and never goes negative. Lab data, gas law problems and spec sheets from the US sometimes start in Fahrenheit and have to be converted before the formulas work.
Examples
- 32 °F (the freezing point of water) is 273.15 K
- 68 °F (a comfortable room) is 293.15 K
- 98.6 °F (normal body temperature) is 310.15 K
- 212 °F (water boiling at sea level) is 373.15 K
