Half an hour of focus

Thirty minutes is a comfortable length for one block of study or deep work: long enough to get past the slow start, short enough to keep your attention to the end. Put your phone away, pick one task, and work until the alarm. Then take a short break before the next block.

For practice that builds over weeks, such as an instrument, a language or drawing, a daily half hour is a common target, and a timer makes it easy to stick to.

Half an hour of activity

Thirty minutes is a typical length for a home workout, a brisk walk, a run, or an online exercise class. In the kitchen it covers many oven dishes and the resting time for dough or marinades. Meeting organisers use half-hour slots too; start the timer when the meeting begins so it ends on time.

To count how long something takes rather than counting down, use the stopwatch.
