How to make a WhatsApp link
- Choose the Country and type the Phone number the way you’d dial it at home. The line under the box shows the full international number so you can check it.
- Add a Message if you want the chat to open with text already typed in.
- Press Copy link, or Download QR code for print. Test the link opens it in WhatsApp.
Where to use a WhatsApp link
- Website and email signature. A “Chat on WhatsApp” button. Copy HTML button gives you a ready link to paste into your site.
- Social media bios. Instagram, TikTok and Facebook pages often have one link slot; a wa.me link opens a chat straight away.
- Print. Put the QR code on menus, flyers, shop windows and packaging. Scanning it with a phone camera opens the chat. The download is a 1024 pixel PNG, large enough for most print.
- Ads and campaigns. Pre-fill a message such as “Hi, I saw your ad about the spring sale” so you know where the chat came from.
Getting the number right
wa.me only works with the full international number. The country code goes first, and the trunk prefix you dial at home does not: the 0 in most of Europe, Africa and Asia, the 1 in North America, the 8 in Russia and Kazakhstan. Italy is the exception that keeps its 0 for landlines. Argentine mobile numbers need a 9 after the country code (54 9 …). If you’re not sure, type the number with a + and the country code and the page uses it exactly as typed.
Pre-filled messages
The message is URL-encoded, so spaces become %20, line breaks %0A, and emoji and accented letters are kept. Keep it short: it appears in the person’s typing box and they still have to press send. The same pre-filled message works on WhatsApp Business numbers. For a link that opens an email instead, use the mailto link generator.
