How to take the scroll speed test

  1. Pick a test length: 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds.
  2. Point at the striped box and scroll inside it as fast as you can, with the wheel, a trackpad or a finger. The timer starts as soon as it moves.
  3. When time is up you see the total distance and your average speed in pixels per second.

How the test works

The box holds a very long striped page. Scroll inside it and the test measures every pixel it moves until the time runs out. The live numbers show the time left, the distance so far and your current average speed.

Any way of scrolling works: a mouse wheel, a free-spinning wheel, a trackpad, a touch screen, dragging the scroll bar or the keyboard once the box has focus. After the time is up, the test ignores movement for a moment so the last flick doesn’t start a new run.

Getting a faster score

  • Free-spinning wheels win. Many mice have a wheel mode that spins freely; a hard flick keeps it scrolling for seconds.
  • Use long trackpad swipes. Momentum carries on after your fingers leave the pad.
  • Check your system settings. Windows and macOS let you change how far one wheel step scrolls. A bigger setting gives a bigger score, so keep it the same when you compare.
