How to convert revolutions per minute to hertz
- Take the value in revolutions per minute.
- Use the formula hertz = revolutions per minute ÷ 60.
- For example, 33.33 rpm is 0.555 Hz.
About revolutions per minute and hertz
Divide revolutions per minute by 60 to get hertz, the number of turns per second. 600 rpm is 10 Hz and 7,200 rpm is 120 Hz.
Engineers convert rpm to Hz to find the frequency at which a spinning part vibrates or makes noise, to set a VFD for a target speed, or to check a strobe or tachometer reading. For angular speed in radians per second, multiply the Hz value by 2π: 60 rpm is 1 Hz, or 6.28 rad/s.
Examples
- 33.33 rpm (a vinyl LP) is 0.555 Hz
- 1,200 rpm (a washing machine spin cycle) is 20 Hz
- 5,400 rpm (a laptop hard drive) is 90 Hz
- 7,200 rpm (a desktop hard drive) is 120 Hz
