How to remove emojis from text
- Paste your text into Input. Emoji are removed as you type.
- Check Output. Words, punctuation and line breaks are left as they were.
- Copy or download the result. The line under the boxes shows how many emoji were removed.
Why remove emoji
- Text messages. An SMS containing a single emoji is sent in a different encoding that fits 70 characters per message instead of 160, so one emoji can turn a single text into two or three.
- Databases and old systems. MySQL’s older utf8 character set can’t store most emoji, and some forms and CSV importers reject or garble them.
- Formal writing. Reports, subtitles and legal text copied from chats or social posts usually need them gone.
- Screen readers. Many screen readers read out the name of every emoji, so a row of five 👏 becomes five spoken words.
The text is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
How emoji are built
Many emoji you see as one picture are several Unicode characters in a row. The tool removes each of these as one unit:
| Emoji | What it is made of |
|---|---|
| 👍 | One character |
| 👍🏽 | Thumbs up plus a skin tone modifier |
| 🇯🇵 | Two regional indicator letters, J and P |
| 👨👩👧 | Three emoji joined by invisible zero-width joiners |
| ❤️ | A heart plus an invisible variation selector |
It’s also why code and database length limits often count one emoji as several characters, even though our Character counter shows it as one.
