About metric horsepower and horsepower
PS stands for Pferdestärke, German for horsepower. It is defined as 75 kilogram-force meters per second, which is 735.5 W. Mechanical horsepower (hp), used in the US and UK, is 745.7 W. So 1 PS is 0.98632 hp: multiply PS by 0.9863 to get hp, or simply knock off 1.4%.
European, Japanese and many other car makers quote engine power in PS, often next to kW. The same unit goes by ch in France, cv in Italy and Spain and pk in the Netherlands. When comparing a European car with a US one, convert PS to hp so you compare like with like.
