How to convert horsepower to kilowatts
- Take the value in horsepower.
- Use the formula kilowatts = horsepower × 0.7456998716.
- For example, 1 hp is 0.746 kW.
About horsepower and kilowatts
This page uses mechanical horsepower, 550 foot-pounds per second, which is 745.7 watts. Multiply horsepower by 0.7457 to get kilowatts, or multiply by 3/4 for an estimate that is about 0.6% high.
US car makers, lawn mowers and boat engines quote horsepower, while European registration documents and spec sheets give engine power in kW. Metric horsepower (PS or cv) is a slightly smaller unit of 735.5 W, so check which one a spec sheet means.
Examples
- 1 hp (one mechanical horsepower) is 0.746 kW
- 5 hp (a typical walk-behind lawn mower) is 3.73 kW
- 20 hp (the Ford Model T engine) is 14.91 kW
- 150 hp (a mid-size family car) is 111.85 kW
