Where blackletter shows up

Blackletter has a heavy, serious look that people link with history, tradition and a bit of menace. You’ll see it on newspaper mastheads such as The New York Times, on diplomas and certificates, on beer labels, in metal band logos, in streetwear and in tattoos. In bios and gamertags a few gothic words give the same feel: 𝔐𝔦𝔑𝔫𝔦𝔀π”₯𝔱 β„œπ”žπ”³π”’π”«π”°.

Why maths needed Fraktur

These letters are in Unicode because mathematicians use them. 𝔀 often names a Lie algebra, 𝔭 a prime ideal, and β„œ and β„‘ stand for the real and imaginary parts of a complex number. Those last two, along with β„, β„Œ and ℨ, were encoded earlier than the rest of the alphabet, so in some fonts they look slightly different from their neighbours.
