How to convert kilograms to grams
- Take the value in kilograms.
- Use the formula grams = kilograms × 1,000.
- For example, 0.25 kg is 250 g.
About kilograms and grams
Multiply kilograms by 1,000 to get grams, or move the decimal point three places to the right: 1.2 kg is 1,200 g, 0.35 kg is 350 g and 0.05 kg is 50 g.
You need grams when a recipe asks for a share of a larger pack, when you weigh portions on a kitchen scale, or when postage bands step up in grams. Decimal kilograms are easy to misread, and 0.5 kg and 0.05 kg differ by a factor of ten, so converting to whole grams avoids slips.
Examples
- 0.25 kg (a quarter kilo) is 250 g
- 0.5 kg (half a kilo) is 500 g
- 1.5 kg (a bag of flour sold as 1.5 kg) is 1,500 g
- 2.5 kg (a bag of potatoes sold as 2.5 kg) is 2,500 g
