How to convert grams to kilograms
- Take the value in grams.
- Use the formula kilograms = grams ÷ 1,000.
- For example, 250 g is 0.25 kg.
About grams and kilograms
A kilogram is 1,000 grams, so divide grams by 1,000 to get kilograms. In practice you move the decimal point three places to the left: 750 g is 0.75 kg, 1,250 g is 1.25 kg and 85 g is 0.085 kg.
Recipes, nutrition labels and kitchen scales work in grams, while shipping rates, luggage limits and body weight use kilograms. Converting is also how you compare prices, since many shops show a price per kg next to a pack sold in grams.
Examples
- 250 g (a block of butter in much of Europe) is 0.25 kg
- 500 g (a common bag of dried pasta) is 0.5 kg
- 1,000 g (one kilogram) is 1 kg
- 3,500 g (a newborn baby weighed in grams) is 3.5 kg
