How to convert JSON to Excel

  1. Paste your JSON into the box, or open or drop a .json file. An array of objects, like most API responses, works best.
  2. Keep nested objects as their own columns (address.city) or untick to keep them as JSON text in one cell.
  3. Click Download file to save the XLSX and open it in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

From JSON to rows and columns

JSON from an API or a database export is usually a list of records, each one an object with the same kinds of fields. A spreadsheet shows exactly that as a table: one row per record, one column per field. The converter collects every key used by any record, in the order it first sees them, so records with missing fields simply get empty cells.

Real data is often nested: an address inside a customer, a list of tags inside a post. Flattening gives each nested field its own column named by its path, the same way JSON to CSV does, so the table stays readable and sortable. Columns are sized to their contents.

Tips

  • Format first: if the JSON won’t convert, check it with the JSON formatter, which points to the exact error.
  • Several tables: wrap them in an object, {“Sheet one”: […], “Sheet two”: […]}, to get a sheet for each.
  • Round trips: Excel to JSON reads the workbook back in the same shape.
  • Need plain text? JSON to CSV gives a CSV file instead.
