How to convert CSV to Excel
- Paste your CSV into the box, open a .csv file, or drop one onto it. Cells copied from a web page or Google Sheets work too.
- Leave the separator on Auto, or pick the one your file uses. Keep numbers and dates as Excel values, or untick the box to keep every cell as text.
- Click Download file to save the XLSX, then open it in Excel, Google Sheets, Numbers or LibreOffice.
What the converter does
CSV is plain text: one line per row with commas (or semicolons or tabs) between the cells. An XLSX file is a proper workbook that keeps each cell’s type. The converter reads the CSV following the standard rules for quotes and separators, decides for each cell whether it is a number, a percentage, a true/false value, a date or text, and writes a workbook with one sheet. Each column is made wide enough for its longest value, up to a sensible maximum.
The rules are deliberately cautious. A value only becomes a number when nothing about it would change: 007 would lose its zeros, so it stays text; 12345678901234567 has more digits than Excel stores exactly, so it stays text too.
Tips
- From Excel in Europe: CSVs saved by Excel in many European countries use semicolons, which Auto detects.
- Keep everything as typed: untick the values box if the file is all codes and labels.
- Several sheets: to build a workbook with more than one sheet, use JSON to Excel with one array per sheet.
- The reverse: Excel to CSV turns a workbook back into CSV.
