How to convert grams to carats
- Take the value in grams.
- Use the formula carats = grams × 5.
- For example, 0.2 g is 1 ct.
About grams and carats
There are exactly 5 carats in a gram, so multiply grams by 5 to get carats. 0.4 g is 2 ct, 2.5 g is 12.5 ct and 10 g is 50 ct.
Pocket and jewelry scales often read in grams, while gem prices and certificates use carats. Converting tells you what a loose stone, a rough crystal or a pearl weighs in the unit a dealer will quote.
Examples
- 0.2 g (one carat) is 1 ct
- 1 g (one gram) is 5 ct
- 2.5 g (a large cabochon or rough crystal) is 12.5 ct
- 10 g (ten grams of tumbled stones) is 50 ct
