How to work out your cat’s age in human years
- Enter your cat’s age in years, and months if you know them.
- Read the equivalent human age and your cat’s life stage.
- Use the chart under the result to look up any age from 1 to 20.
Cat years to human years
| Cat age | Human age | Cat age | Human age |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 15 | 8 | 48 |
| 2 | 24 | 10 | 56 |
| 3 | 28 | 12 | 64 |
| 4 | 32 | 14 | 72 |
| 5 | 36 | 16 | 80 |
| 6 | 40 | 18 | 88 |
| 7 | 44 | 20 | 96 |
For ages between whole years the calculator draws a straight line between these points. Before a cat’s first birthday it shows “under 15”, because kittens change so quickly that a single number would mislead.
Why cats age fast at first
Like dogs, cats pack their childhood and teenage years into the first year or two of life, then age more steadily. That is why a simple “times seven” rule doesn’t fit: it would make a 1-year-old cat a 7-year-old child, when in fact it is already an adult. Regular check-ups matter more as cats move into the mature and senior stages. For dogs, see the dog age calculator.
