How to convert text to camelCase
- Paste your words or names into Input, one per line.
- Each line becomes one camelCase name: first word lowercase, every next word with a capital.
- Copy the result or download it as a text file.
Where camelCase is used
camelCase is the usual style for variable and function names in JavaScript, TypeScript and Java, and in many JSON APIs that are read by JavaScript code. If a database uses snake_case columns and the front end expects camelCase, you often need to convert a list of field names, which is what this tool is for.
The related style with a capital first letter, UserProfileSettings, is PascalCase. It’s used for class and type names, and the PascalCase converter makes it.
How words are found
The converter splits each line into words at spaces, punctuation, underscores and hyphens, and also where a lowercase letter is followed by a capital. That’s why it can take a name that’s already in camelCase or PascalCase, such as backgroundColor, and still find both words. Everything is then lowercased and rejoined with a capital at the start of each word after the first. For other styles, the change case tool has them all in one place.
