How to find the volume of a shape
- Choose the shape.
- Enter its measurements, all in the same unit.
- Read the volume in cubic units, with the formula and the surface area. In centimeters, the liters are shown too.
Formulas
| Solid | Volume | Surface area |
|---|---|---|
| Cube | a³ | 6a² |
| Box | lwh | 2(lw + lh + wh) |
| Cylinder | πr²h | 2πr(r + h) |
| Sphere | ⁴⁄₃πr³ | 4πr² |
| Cone | ⅓πr²h | πr(r + √(r² + h²)) |
| Pyramid | ⅓lwh | lw + l√((w/2)² + h²) + w√((l/2)² + h²) |
Units
Volume comes out in cubic units: cm³, m³, in³ or ft³. To turn cubic feet into US gallons multiply by about 7.48, and use the volume converter for anything else.
