About US tons and pounds
A US ton, also called a short ton, is exactly 2,000 pounds. Multiply tons by 2,000 to get pounds: 1.5 tons is 3,000 lb and 40 tons is 80,000 lb.
Other countries use other tons. A metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kg, or 2,204.62 lb, and the UK long ton is 2,240 lb. If a weight comes from outside the US, check which one is meant before converting.
Examples
- 0.5 ton (the “half-ton” in a half-ton pickup) is 1,000 lb
- 1 ton (one US ton) is 2,000 lb
- 13 ton (the top of the Class 6 truck weight range) is 26,000 lb
- 40 ton (the US federal weight limit for a loaded semi truck) is 80,000 lb
