How to work out how many tiles you need

  1. Choose Feet and inches or Metres and cm, and enter the length and width of the floor or wall to tile.
  2. Enter the Tile size and the Grout gap. Fractions like 1/8 work.
  3. Set the Extra for cuts: 10% for a straight layout, 15% for diagonal or herringbone. Add Tiles per box to see how many boxes to buy.

How the tiles are counted

Tiles = area ÷ ((tile width + grout) × (tile length + grout)), then the extra for cuts is added and the total rounded up. Boxes are rounded up too, since tiles are sold by the box.

For 30 × 30 cm tiles with 3 mm grout on a 3 × 2.5 m floor (7.5 m²), that gives 82 tiles to cover it and 90 with 10% extra.

Before you order

  • Check the box coverage. Boxes often state the area they cover; dividing your area by it is a quick check on this result.
  • Buy from one batch. Tiles from different production runs can differ slightly in shade. The batch or lot number is printed on the box.
  • Plan the layout. Starting from the centre of the room so the cut tiles at each edge are the same size looks better and can reduce waste.
