How to play pink noise

  1. Press Play. Pink noise fades in over a second.
  2. Set the Volume just high enough to cover the sounds around you.
  3. To sleep with it, pick a time under Stop after. It fades out gently when the time is up. Space plays and stops it.

What pink noise sounds like

Pink noise is a soft, even sound, close to steady rain or wind in leaves. It sits between bright white noise and deep brown noise. Because each octave carries the same energy, it sounds balanced to most people, which is why it’s popular for sleeping, studying and masking voices in an open office.

This page makes the noise in your browser as it plays. Nothing repeats, there’s no recording to download, and each ear gets its own random stream, which sounds more spacious on headphones.

Pink, white and brown

Noise Energy per octave Sounds like
White Rises 3 dB each octave Bright hiss, radio static
Pink Same in every octave Steady rain
Brown Falls 3 dB each octave Deep rumble, distant surf

If pink is too bright for you, try brown. The noise generator has white, pink, brown and green noise in one place.

Tips

  • Keep it quiet. Just loud enough to blur other sounds. For long listening on headphones, go lower still.
  • Use the sleep timer. It fades out over a few seconds so the end doesn’t wake you.
  • Pair it with a timer for focus. Run a Pomodoro timer in another tab for work sessions.
