How to convert miles per hour to meters per second
- Take the value in miles per hour.
- Use the formula meters per second = miles per hour × 0.44704.
- For example, 30 mph is 13.41 m/s.
About miles per hour and meters per second
A mile is exactly 1,609.344 m and an hour is 3,600 s, so 1 mph is 1,609.344 ÷ 3,600 = 0.44704 m/s exactly. Multiply mph by 0.44704 to get m/s, or halve it and take off 10% for a quick estimate.
Physics and engineering formulas want speed in m/s, so a car speed, a pitch speed or a wind speed in mph has to be converted before working out kinetic energy, braking distance or acceleration.
Examples
- 30 mph (a common urban speed limit in the US and UK) is 13.41 m/s
- 60 mph (the 0 to 60 mph benchmark) is 26.82 m/s
- 70 mph (the UK motorway speed limit) is 31.29 m/s
- 767 mph (about the speed of sound in air at 20 °C) is 342.88 m/s
