How Morse code works
Morse code spells out each letter as a pattern of short and long signals: dots and dashes. The most common letters get the shortest codes, so E is a single dot and T a single dash, while rare letters like Q (--.-) are longer. Timing carries the rest: a dash lasts three dots, letters are separated by a gap of three dots and words by a gap of seven.
