How to get the MD5 hash of text
- Paste or type your text into Input.
- The 32-character MD5 hash appears in Hash as you type.
- Turn on Hash each line to hash a list, one MD5 per line. To check a file's MD5 checksum, click Open and paste the published checksum into Expected hash.
Where MD5 is still used
MD5 is old but everywhere. Download pages list MD5 checksums so you can confirm a file arrived intact. Some APIs ask for the MD5 of a request body, Gravatar builds profile picture links from the MD5 of an email address, and older databases use it to find duplicate records. For anything that has to resist an attacker, use SHA-256 instead.
Matching a hash from somewhere else
If your MD5 doesn’t match, check for invisible differences first. A trailing newline, a space at the end or Windows line endings all change the hash completely. Paste the exact text, without anything added, and compare again.
