Kilogram-force to newtons

Convert kgf to newtons with a chart.

1 kgf = 9.80665 Nnewtons = kilograms-force × 9.80665

How to convert kilograms-force to newtons

  1. Take the value in kilograms-force.
  2. Use the formula newtons = kilograms-force × 9.80665.
  3. For example, 1 kgf is 9.81 N.

About kilograms-force and newtons

A kilogram-force is the weight of a 1 kg mass under standard gravity, defined as exactly 9.80665 newtons. Multiply kgf by 9.80665 to get N. For a quick estimate multiply by 10, which is about 2% high.

The kgf is not an SI unit, but it still shows up on hand grip dynamometers, spring scales, older spec sheets and thrust figures for small motors and propellers. Physics and engineering use newtons, so these figures often need converting. The kilopond (kp) is another name for the same unit.

Examples

  • 1 kgf (the weight of a 1 kg mass) is 9.81 N
  • 50 kgf (a 50 kgf grip strength reading, an illustrative value) is 490.33 N
  • 70 kgf (a 70 kg person standing still) is 686.47 N
  • 1,000 kgf (the weight of a metric ton) is 9,806.65 N
