Ideal gas law calculator (PV = nRT)

Solve PV = nRT.

Volume (V = nRT / P)

22.414 L

PV = nRT treats the gas as ideal: close for most gases near room conditions, less so at high pressure or low temperature.

How to use the ideal gas law

  1. Choose what to solve for: pressure, volume, amount in moles or temperature.
  2. Enter the other three values and pick their units. Temperatures in °C or °F are converted to kelvin for you.
  3. Read the answer in your unit, the same value in other units, and every quantity in SI units.

Rearranging PV = nRT

  • Pressure: P = nRT / V
  • Volume: V = nRT / P
  • Amount: n = PV / RT
  • Temperature: T = PV / nR

With the defaults (1 mol at 0 °C and 101.325 kPa), the volume comes out at 22.414 L, the molar volume of an ideal gas at those conditions.

From moles to grams

The law counts gas in moles. To work with a mass, divide grams by the gas’s molar mass: 32 g of oxygen (O₂, 31.998 g/mol) is 1.000 mol. The molar mass calculator gives the molar mass of any formula.
