How to use the colour name list

  1. Browse by colour family with the buttons, or type a name or part of a hex code in the filter.
  2. Click a name, HEX code or RGB value to copy it.
  3. Use the name directly in CSS, for example color: steelblue;.

The 16 basic colours

HTML 4 defined 16 colour names that every browser has always understood: black, silver, gray, white, maroon, red, purple, fuchsia, green, lime, olive, yellow, navy, blue, teal and aqua. The rest came later from the X11 colour list.

Names, HEX or RGB?

Names are easy to read in code but there are only 148 of them. For brand colours and exact shades, use HEX (#1f2430) or rgb() and hsl(), which can express any colour. The colour converter turns any of these into the others.
