How to make a beat

  1. Press Play or Space to hear the starting pattern, or pick another from Pattern: rock, house, hip hop, disco, reggaeton, trap or funk.
  2. Click or tap the squares to add or remove hits. Each row is a drum and each column is a sixteenth note, and the shaded columns mark the four beats of the bar. Drag across squares to fill several at once. On a phone, switch between steps 1 to 8 and 9 to 16.
  3. For a longer groove or a fill, set Bars to 2 or 4. The new bars start as copies of the first, so change only what should be different, and pick the bar to edit under Editing bar. A line marks the bar that is playing.
  4. Set the tempo and add swing for a looser groove. Click a drum’s name, or press A to K, to play it by hand. Press Copy share link to send the beat, or Download loop for a WAV file.

Building a beat

  • Start with kick and snare. A kick on beats 1 and 3 and a snare on 2 and 4 is the base of most pop and rock.
  • Add hi-hats for movement. Eighth notes (every second square) keep time; sixteenths (every square) sound busier, as in trap.
  • Leave space. A beat with every square filled sounds like noise. Taking hits out often makes a groove stronger.
  • Keep time while you practice with the metronome, or find a song’s tempo with the BPM detector.
