How to use the phone level

  1. Open this page on your phone. On a computer, scan the QR code with the phone’s camera. On an iPhone, tap Start the level and allow motion access.
  2. For a table or floor, choose Flat surface and lay the phone on it, screen up. For a shelf or a picture frame, choose On its edge and stand the phone on its long or short edge against it.
  3. Read the angle. Centred and green means level. If your phone has a camera bump, use Set zero here on a surface you know is level first.

Flat and edge modes

Flat surface works like a round bullseye level: lay the phone face up and the bubble shows which way the surface tilts in both directions at once. The bubble always floats to the high side, just like the air bubble in a real level. Left–right and front–back angles are shown separately.

On its edge works like a long tube level. Stand the phone on one of its edges against a shelf, a picture frame or a door frame. The page works out which edge is down, turns the tube to match, and shows how far that edge is from level. It works in both portrait and landscape.

Tips for good readings

  • Take the case off if it isn’t flat, and keep the phone still for a second before reading.
  • Use the long edge for shelves and frames; it bridges small bumps in the surface.
  • Hold reading freezes the numbers, useful when you can’t see the screen while the phone is in place.
  • Avoid vibration. A running washing machine or a phone resting on a speaker gives jumpy readings.

To turn a slope into a gradient over a distance, use the slope calculator. For measuring small things on screen, there’s also an online ruler.
